Maintaining Your Driveway – Tips for Long-Lasting Results

It makes sense to maintain a new driveway since it represents a sizable investment in your home. Regardless of whether you’ve decided on block paving, tarmac, resin binding, or shingle, your driveway will continue to look its best and function well for many years with the right upkeep.

For more than 20 years, Set in Stone Paving has been constructing premium driveways in Buckinghamshire, Windsor and Berkshire, Wokingham, Aylesbury, and the neighboring areas. As a family-owned, fully certified, and insured company, we provide outstanding installations along with maintenance advice.

These are our best recommendations for driveway maintenance.

1)Maintain Cleanliness

Frequent cleaning stops the accumulation of dirt, moss, and algae. Leaves, grit, and debris can be removed from most surfaces with a simple sweep every few weeks using a stiff broom.

Use a pressure washer on a low setting for more difficult-to-remove stains, particularly on block paving and resin-bound surfaces. Steer clear of harsh chemicals that could harm the material or change its color.

2)Look for Weeds

In addition to quickly degrading your driveway’s appearance, weeds can harm joints and edges if they are not controlled. To keep block paving compact and prevent weed growth, periodically brush kiln-dried sand into the joints.

Although tarmac and resin-bound driveways are more weed-resistant, weeds that grow along the edges should be pulled.

3)Control the Drainage

In order to avoid standing water, which over time can harm your driveway, proper drainage is crucial. Remove any leaves and debris from any nearby gullies or drains. A professional inspection might be worthwhile if you observe recurring puddles in order to address the problem before it gets worse.

4)Take Care of Small Repairs Right Away

It is best to address minor problems early on to keep them from getting worse, like a loose block, a small crack in the tarmac, or a patch of worn shingle. Block paving has the advantage that individual blocks are easily lifted and replaced, whereas tarmac and resin-bound pavement can frequently be fixed without requiring a complete surface restoration.

The Significance of Expert Installation

Over time, a well-laid driveway will require less upkeep. In order to give you the best foundation for long-term performance, Set in Stone Paving installs every driveway with appropriate groundwork, sturdy sub-bases, and consideration for drainage.

Additionally, we have a £10 million public liability insurance policy and are authorized to perform council-mandated work, such as dropped kerbs. For as little as £150, we can handle the planning permission and license application if you require a dropped kerb, guaranteeing a secure and legal entry to your house.

How to Choose the Best Driveway Surface for Your Property

Your driveway is an important part of the outside of your house and serves as more than just a useful parking area. The correct surface can increase your property’s curb appeal, functionality, and even value. But how do you choose the best material when there are so many options?

For more than 20 years, Set in Stone Paving has been creating and constructing driveways in Buckinghamshire, Windsor and Berkshire, Wokingham, Aylesbury, and the neighboring areas. We provide a variety of premium surfaces, each with unique benefits, including block paving, tarmac, resin-bound, and shingle.

Here’s how to pick the best one for you.

1)Block Paving: Classic and Adaptable

Because of its classic appearance and versatility, block paving is still one of the most popular driveway options in the UK.

Benefits:

● Large range of finishes, colors, and patterns.

● Simple to fix—damaged blocks can be swapped out one at a time.

● Can be embellished with decorative elements and borders.

Ideal For: Homeowners seeking a durable, fashionable driveway that can be customized for their property.

2)Tarmac—Smooth, Sturdy, and Economical Tarmac

It’s also known as asphalt, is a sensible, long-lasting option, especially for larger driveways or high-traffic areas.

Benefits:

● Fast installation after the foundation is finished.

● Robust and resilient in the face of continuous traffic.

● Simple, clean design that complements the majority of property types.

3)Resin Bound: Modern and Low-Maintenance

For a smooth, seamless finish, resin-bound driveways blend natural aggregates with a resin binder.

Benefits:

● Offered in a wide variety of colors and blends.

● Options that are permeable to permit natural drainage.

● Low maintenance and resistant to stains and weeds.

Ideal For: Homeowners seeking a high-end, contemporary surface that requires little maintenance and looks fantastic.

4)Shingle (Gravel): Cost-effective and Rustic

Shingle provides a softer, more organic appearance that complements period or rural homes well.

Benefits:

● Outstanding drainage.

● Installing and updating over time is reasonably priced.

● A variety of sizes and colors to fit your property.

Ideal For: People looking for a more affordable, conventional, environmentally friendly surface.

How We Handle Each Driveway

The foundation is crucial regardless of the surface you select. Here at Set in Stone Paving, we consistently:

● Dig to the proper depth.

● Put in a sturdy sub-base.

● Make sure the drainage is adequate.

● Carefully lay the surface of your choice.

We are a family-owned company that is completely qualified, fully insured, and has a £10 million public liability policy. We also never demand payment in advance.

Do You Need a Dropped Kerb?

For as little as £150, we can handle the dropped kerb license and planning permission if your driveway requires a new or widened access point. Your new driveway will be completely compliant because we have been authorized to complete the work in accordance with local council standards.

Let’s Find Your Perfect Driveway

We can assist you in selecting the best option, regardless of your preference for the classic appeal of block paving, the contemporary appearance of resin, the usefulness of tarmac, or the rustic charm of shingle.

The Complete Guide to Planning Permission for Dropped Kerbs

If you are thinking about installing a new driveway or extending your current driveway, you may also require a dropped kerb (also known as a vehicle crossover). A dropped kerb permits vehicles to drive over the pavement without doing damage to the kerb stones or footway, in a legal and safe manner. But you cannot start the physical work until you have obtained planning permission, and this is often the step that lets homeowners down.

At Set in Stone Paving we have been carrying out dropped kerb installations for councils for over 20 years, in Buckinghamshire, Windsor and Berkshire, Wokingham, Aylesbury and nearby areas. We are fully qualified to carry out works on behalf of local councils, and we have £10 million public liability insurance, should you worry anything might go wrong. Most importantly we make planning permission a simple, stress free process for our customers.

Do You Need Planning Permission?

Yes, in many situations, particularly if your property faces a public road or walkway. Before making any changes to the pavement, including lowering the kerb, you must apply for planning permission from your local council.

Permission will most likely be required if:

● You reside on a road that is classified as A, B, or C.

● You intend to cross a council-maintained walkway or pavement.

● Your property has listed status or is located in a conservation area.

The Application Process

Step 1: Site Evaluation

We conduct a complimentary site survey to assess the capability of your location for the dropped kerb and also to find any other impediments like utility lines, streetlight, or drainage covers.

Step 2: Documentation

Councils require exact plans that can include thoroughly accurate measurements and positioning as well as confirmation that the works would satisfy their requirements. This is precisely where our experience comes in very handy; we know exactly what the councils expect.

Step 3: Submission

We present the deals for you at an introductory fee of as low as £150. This fee covers the cost of drawings preparation for filling in the forms and making all contacts with the council throughout the process.

Step 4: Approval and Installation

After receiving the permission granted in this process, we schedule it for installation. All the works are carried out in full compliance with the regulations, under safety aspects, durability, and a tidy finish as the contracted council contractor.

Why Use a Qualified Contractor?

A dropped kerb requires an authorized, insured professional to complete because it involves modifying public property. It is not a straightforward do-it-yourself task. Unauthorized work may result in fines, curb removal, and additional pavement restoration expenses.

Selecting Set in Stone Paving gives you the assurance that:

● Every legal requirement will be fulfilled.

● Every legal requirement will be fulfilled.

● The quality of the work will be excellent.

● Delays and expensive errors will be avoided.

Your driveway is not just a parking space for your car – it is the first thing that visitors will see at your home. Well-laid paving will not only look fantastic, it will also convey to visitors and potential buyers a quality and level of care taken.

2) Improve Property Value

A new driveway can provide a good return on investment. Estate agents will tell you that a driveway, supplied and laid by a professional can add substantial value to a property. This will add true value to a property, especially in areas where off-street parking is desirable. A clean, well laid durable surface is something that buyers like and appreciate when they are considering the price.

3)Enhance practicality and safety

A rough or worn driveway can lead to intractable trip hazards, and drainage issues or damage your vehicle’s suspension. Whatever your desires, we can design a and build a surface suited to your requirements to enhance your everyday life.

Why a Council-Approved, Fully Insured Contractor Matters

When it comes to works such as dropped kerbs, driveways, and other paving works that connect to the public footway, employing a council-approved contractor with full insurance is the right approach, and for many projects, the only choice. As these works are considered highway works, they must comply with legal obligations, safety and construction standards required by law, and the rules and regulations of the local area. If the required processes, approvals, or insurance is not adhered to then you could be looking at delays, fines or even have to start all over again.

At Set in Stone Paving, we are fully qualified to carry out dropped kerb works for local councils and have all relevant licenses, and carry a £10 million public liability insurance policy to give the customer and public confidence when we are on site. With over 20 years experience and a reputation for quality and reliability, we treat every project with care, professionalism and precision.

The Importance of Council Approval

Local authorities have strict requirements about who can do specific work the local authority believes is important for public safety and infrastructure. We never want our work, especially dropped kerbs, to endanger public use and impact public infrastructure.

By hiring a local authority approved contractor like Set in Stone Paving, you are assured that:

● All works will adhere to government guidelines.

● Public safety regulations for pedestrians, vehicle drivers, and property owners will be maintained.

● No legal issues will arise due to unapproved works.

For our clients, we also handle the process and arrange applicable planning permission and license applications, starting from just £150. That’s right, so in that local authority labyrinth of forms and regulations, you don’t have to navigate the complexities, and we do it quickly for you and save you stress.

Why Full Insurance is Important

Public liability insurance is there to protect all parties – you, your property, and members of the public – in the event of anything unexpected happening during the project. Our coverage is £10 million which means even in the unlikely event of damage or there is an accident, you are completely covered.

This insurance is more than a safety net, it is a reassurance that we operate in a professional manner, that we take responsibility in our work and that we are following best practice in all areas of our business.

Experience You Can Trust

With over two decades of experience in the paving industry, our team have done everything and seen everything – from standard residential driveways to complex access solutions involving utility work, drainage works, access upgrades and relevant considerations for heritage properties.

Also, because we are a family-run business, you will always receive a personal service touch. Our office manager will answer any questions, provide updates and ensure our job runs smoothly from beginning to end.

2)Improve Access and Safety

Pathways improve access to and around your garden in all weather, especially in wet seasons. They provide a dry surface to walk across and prevent damage to garden lawn or planting beds.

3)Enhance Value

A well-planned layout of patio and pathways is not only beautiful, but enhances the usability of your home and garden which may be a desirable feature for people looking to purchase your property.

Design Ideas to Consider

Zoned Areas

It’s a good idea to divide your garden into zones that have purpose — perhaps a larger dining area close to the house, a smaller seating area tucked into a sunny corner, and maybe a calm reading spot surrounded by plants.

Borders and Edging

Define spaces, create patterns and add overall appeal with contrasting paving blocks or edging stones.

Steps & Levels

If your garden has a slope, gentle steps and terraced areas add functionality and charm.

Mixed Materials

Combine materials in order to have a unique look. You can have block paving combined with resin or natural stone to make contrasting textures.

Resin Bound Driveways – Low Maintenance, High Kerb Appeal

If you’re thinking about a new driveway, it’s difficult to surpass the contemporary look and function of a resin bound surface. It is unsurprising that this premium choice has become increasingly attractive for homeowners in the UK who want a stylish, hardwearing finish which is easy to maintain.

Set in Stone Paving has been installing resin bound drives, paths and patios in and around Buckinghamshire, Windsor and Berkshire, Wokingham, Aylesbury and all other nearby areas for over 20 years. We have always been a family run business and pride ourselves on providing best in-class workmanship at competitive prices, and we never ask for an upfront payment.

What is a Resin Bound Driveway?

A gloss aggregate is laid with a specialist resin binder mixed in with natural stone aggregates.  When you apply gloss blend with plated natural stone aggregate, you will get a smooth, seamless surface to work with, that can be made in colours and textures to suit your property.

Unlike resin bonded surfaces  – where you are scattering the stone onto the resin, resin bound surfaces involve mixing the aggregate prior to laying the surface. This means you are ensuring a more uniform surface which is also more durable than a resin bonded system.

Key Benefits of Resin Bound

1) Attractive and Customisable

Resin bound surfacing comes in a wide variety of aggregate colors, from warm golden shades to contemporary greys and silvers, as well as subtle or bold blends or contrasts to suit your home.

2)Seamless Appearance

The joint-free finish gives a sleek, modern look which is suitable for both new builds and period properties.

3)Low Maintenance

With a quick sweep and occasional wash, you can keep your driveway looking fresh! The surface is also less prone to weed growth and staining, which means maintenance is simple all year round.

4)Permeable Options

If installed over the correct base, resin bound driveways are fully permeable, allowing rain water to drain through and preventing puddles, additionally, it may even lessen the need for additional drainage solution.

Our Installation Process

All resin bound driveways we have constructed begin with sound groundwork. We excavate to the right depth, install a stable sub-base, incorporate proper drainage, and apply the resin mix using consideration for the prevailing weather conditions to avoid improper curing and to gain a seamless finish.

Our professional teams deliver quality by working efficiently; the end result will provide consistency of colour, evenness of coverage and clean edges. Your driveway is ready to light use after 24 hours of completion and is usually ready for full use shortly after but will depend on your conditions.

Why Choose Set in Stone Paving?

We’re qualified with qualifications and insurance and are approved to work to local council standards. With 20 years of experience we know that technical know-how is only one part of the puzzle and good customer service is key as well. Our office manager will happily take questions and help make sure your project flows as it should.

We also carry out complementary services such as dropped kerbs, block paving, tarmac, shingle driveways, patios and pathways, so your entire exterior can uniform to your new resin bound surface.

Need a Dropped Kerb Too?

If you are going to need a dropped kerb to access your new driveway, we’ll deal with your planning permission and application for your licence for as little as £150.  Our team will simply carry out the work in line with Council requirements to provide you with a safe and legal entrance to your property.

Tarmac vs Resin vs Shingle – Which Driveway Suits Your Home?

Your driveway could be one of your property`s most heavily-trafficked spots, and thus it is a choice that requires due consideration. The perfect material should offer a good compromise between looks, durability, and cost, while fulfilling your home’s style as well as your daily requirements.

For more than 20 years, Set in Stone Paving has been putting in driveways all over Buckinghamshire, Windsor and Berkshire, Wokingham, Aylesbury, and the surrounding areas. Tarmac, resin, and shingle are the three types of surface that we specialize in and have different benefits. Here are comparisons for you to consider while choosing for your own home.

Tarmac – The Classic, Cost-Effective Option

Tarmac, aka asphalt, has long been used and is a great value driveway surface.

Advantages:

● Durable: Daily vehicle use does not subject it to cracks and breakage easily.

● Installation: Because tarmac can be laid very shortly after the sub-base is ready, it is one of the quickest surfaces to install.

● Finish: Clean and uniform.

● Most Preferred for: Homeowners who simply want a functional driveway that is durable and offers an affordable price.

Resin Bound – Modern and Low Maintenance

Natural stone aggregates and a specialized resin binder are combined to create a smooth, ornamental surface in resin-bound surfaces.

Benefits:

● Beautiful Designs: Comes in a variety of colors to match any type of property.

● Seamless Look: Weeds cannot grow through any joints or spaces.

● Low Maintenance: It maintains its fresh appearance with periodic sweeping and washing.

● Permeable Options: Resin-bound systems have the ability to naturally drain water when installed with the proper sub-base.

● Ideal For: Homeowners looking for a high-end, modern finish that requires little maintenance.

Shingle (Gravel) – A Natural Look and Versatility

A shingle driveway has a softer, more rustic look ideal for period homes and rural properties.

Benefits:

Low Cost: Often lower installation cost than other materials.

Good Drainage: Naturally permeable means water can drain easily resulting in less surface water.

Versatility: Available in different sizes, colours, shapes, and types of stone.

Best For: Traditional look, good drainage, environmentally friendly.

Our Process for Installation

Whichever surface, the lifespan of your driveway will depend on the quality of the supporting foundations. At Set in Stone Paving, we will never skimp. All of our projects start with careful excavation, solid sub-base, and drainage management. As a result, you can be assured that your drive will perform as good as it looks.

Looking for a Dropped Kerb Too?

If you require a dropped kerb for your new driveway for vehicle access, we can take care of the planning permission and licence application for only £150. Once the planning has been secured, we will then do the installation to Council standards giving you a fully compliant entrance.

Let’s Find That Surface

Block Paving Driveways – Classic Style, Built to Last

An attractively installed driveway is more than just a place to park your car. A driveway is a visitors, and passer-by’s first impression of your home and what you could probably call your landscaping. Of all the surface options it could be said that block paving continues to be one of the most attractive options for driveways, and for good reason. Block paving driveways are attractive, hard-wearing, versatile with a wide range of surfacing that will enhance your property when all is finished, and they’ll provide a long-lasting surface that you can enjoy for decades.

At Set in Stone Paving we have been installing block paved driveways across Buckinghamshire, Windsor and Berkshire, Wokingham, Aylesbury and surrounding areas for over 20 years. Our family-run business is fully qualified, fully insured, and focuses on quality workmanship at competitive prices, with no deposits.

The Advantages of Block Paving

1) Timeless Style

The classic look of block paving is a timeless design choice – fitting into both modern and contemporary properties. Whether you prefer a clean, modern finish, or a more rustic, cobbled finish, the wide range of colours, textures and patterns will enable you to achieve the look you are going for.

2) Versatility in Design

Block paving comes in a variety of design patterns from herringbone and stretcher bond to complex circular designs. Block paving is completely flexible as design is limited only by imagination, and borders, contrasts and decorative features can all be included to enhance character, style and individuality of your driveway.

3)Easy to Maintain (Repairable)

Perhaps the biggest benefit of block paving is the ease of upkeep. Block paving can be easily repaired because when blocks become damaged or stained, they can be replaced individually, which means you do not have to replace the whole driveway surface, so your driveway can keep looking fresh for years to come.

4)Structural Strength and Durability

When block paving is installed correctly, on a well compacted sub-base, weight bearing tests show it is very strong and can support high levels of heavy traffic while resisting cracking and settlement.

Our Installation Process

We do not skimp or cut corners — the foundation of a long lasting block paved driveway is getting the groundwork correct. Our standard practices are as follows:

Free Site Survey & Design Consultation

We attend your property and inspect the space, discuss your design ideas, take measurements. This initial meeting is where we will also explore colour options and patterns to match your home.

Ground Preparation

We excavate the existing structure to the required depth, lay a solid cutting-edge sub-base, and ensure there is the correct drainage and anybody associated manholes are raised correctly.

Laying

We lay using the chosen blocks and can accommodate nearly any style that we had sourced with you as a front; likewise, we meticulously honk when laying in reference to predetermined patterns in order to ensure a professional end-product with no joints more than 1.5mm out of alignment.

Jointing & Compaction

Once complete we will join using kiln dried sand then compact the laying once we are satisfied with the quality of laying.

Finishing Touches

When complete, we will border, edge, and or decorative pieces around the outermost perimeter where appropriate. Furthermore, we will remove all material and waste residue on-site, leaving a neat and tidy but sufficient functional area.

Dropped Kerbs Made Simple: Your Step-by-Step Guide

If you are thinking of installing off-street parking on your property, you’ll need to have a dropped kerb, or footway crossing as it’s sometimes referred to. A dropped kerb allows a smooth and legal transition from the road to the driveway, preventing damage to the pavement (footway) and your vehicle’s suspension. However, dropped kerbs aren’t simply removing some paving slabs and putting a section of tarmac down; installing a dropped kerb is a council governed process that requires planning permission, a licence, and installation by a qualified works contractor.

When it comes to dropped kerbs, with over 20 years’ experience, we are a qualified with the necessary licensing and have £10 million public liability insurance to do this work to the highest standard in a safe environment.

2)Council Approval & Licensing

Completing the council paperwork can be intimidating, which is why it makes good sense to let us complete the full application and obtain the necessary consents for you, including the planning permission and dropped kerb licence, which we provide for as little as £150.
